The North Bergen Police Force was established in 1923, taking over from the then-active force known as ’roundsmen’, who began operations at the municipality in 1907. North Bergen’s local group of fire-fighters converged with those of the neighboring communities of West New York, Guttenberg, Weehawken, and Union City in 1999 to create the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue (NHRFR) which responded in January 2009 to the accident of Flight 1549.
