The Homeowner’s Basic Plumbing Toolbox
It’s important to have the right tools for the job and once you put this toolbox we are going to talk about together, you can take on many of the simple plumbing jobs around the house you run into commonly yourself. . . and you’ll be able to save some money, too!
Everything in this kit we put together here at Eco Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning is pretty inexpensive. The grand total of everything here combined could be found for about $100, and you won’t need it all unless you’re doing basic plumbing jobs around the house fairly often. Either way, we highly recommend you make this small investment; it’s certainly cheaper than hiring us to come out and you’ll impress the family with your new skills to boot. So let’s get on with the tools, and we’ll briefly comment on each one:
Plumber’s or pipe wrench
You may be able to get by with a large crescent wrench for some jobs, but a plumber’s wrench is better because it opens up wider and grips a lot better. The teeth on the wrench will grip a pipe in the direction you turn it, and will loosen itself when you move it the other direction. They cost about $15.
Basin wrench
If you’re installing or replacing a faucet somewhere like the sink in the bathroom, then you’ll likely run into some tight places where you have to get to some nuts. A basin wrench has an adjustable-angle head so you can get to them from below. This can be found for less than $20.
Seat wrench
Typically, you’re only going to need a seat wrench if you’re replacing some types of tubs or sink faucets, but for the cost, it’s nice to have even if you only use it once or twice. They’re around $10 brand new.
Water meter key
You’ll only need one of these if you need to shut off the main water supply at your water meter. You may be able to get by with a pair of vice grips, but a key makes it a lot faster. Plus, having one means you can turn off your water quickly in an emergency. A good one should cost under $20.
Drain snake
This is a simple, shorter version of the big gas-powered snake that Eco Plumbing’s plumbers would use to clear clogs deep down your drains. If the clog isn’t too deep then one of these miniature versions can save you money. A simple 25-foot-long model with a simple hand-crank will only cost $25 new.
Plumber’s putty
This is a type of putty that air dries and won’t stick to your fingers, so it’s easy to apply with your bare hands without worrying about a tough time to remove it. It’s great for sealing joints of all sorts as long as they don’t have pressure. Drain lines are common places this can be used. It also lasts a long time if you keep the container sealed so it doesn’t dry out. Putty should run you under $7.
Teflon tape
You’ll use this tape to wrap the threads at the ends of pipe fittings to provide extra protection against leaks. You won’t need more than a few inches on a given project so the roll will last a long time. You can get these little rolls about anywhere and they cost $2 or $3 each.
